ACCESS STATEMENT  - APRIL COTTAGE

 

 

OVERVIEW

April Cottage is a small family run B&B in a detached property with a garden. It is situated on a slight incline away from a level 10-minute walk from the main town on St. Mary's as well as the quay, shops, beaches and numerous restaurants.

All guest accommodation is situated on the first floor, up stairs.

We aim to cater for all our guests' needs and the following statement is designed as a summary of relevant information and we would ask you to contact us prior to arrival if you require any special assistance or have any further queries.

ARRIVAL ON ST. MARY'S:     

Helicopter passengers are transported from St Mary's Airport via the heliport shuttle service which awaits each flight and delivers guests direct to our gate.  It is possible to purchase a return ticket for this service, they will require your departure date and flight time.  For further information, tel: 01720 422126 

Skybus passengers are met on arrival at the airport by Paulger's Transport 01720 423701) who will transport you to April Cottage and book your return journey. 

Scillonian III ferry passengers will arrive at the quay. Luggage labelled for your destination can be loaded on the quay at Penzance and will be delivered to April Cottage for a small fee per item. A similar service is offered for the return crossing. You will have to walk from the quay to the accommodation - 10 minutes flat - 2 minutes slight incline. If you require taxi transport from the quay, telephone numbers for pre-booking can be found in the Local Information section at the end of this statement 

Directions from quay:  

Walk up the quay until the Mermaid Pub is on the left, bear left and follow the main road through the centre of town bearing left towards the Town Hall. With the Town Hall on your right and a green park where the road forks and divides, take the right hand side and follow this road up towards the Parish Church. In front of the church take the road to the right up the slight incline and  after approximately 100 yards,  April Cottage is on your right hand side clearly identified, a detached cream house set in its own gardens.

CAR-PARKING:

In the unlikely event you would bring your own transport to Scilly we only offer off-road parking.

EXTERNAL ACCESS:

There is a slight slope down the drive which leads to a concrete path.  We can assist with luggage.  There is good outside lighting provided via a timer switch.

MAIN ENTRANCE & RECEPTION: 

  • The front door is reached by a 22cm high step.
  • The front door leads to a hallway.
  • There is no seating available in the hall.
  • The ground floor is carpeted with the exception of the dining room/conservatory.

PUBLIC AREAS:

  • Carpeted stairs lead from the hallway to the guest accommodation
  • The first step measures 24cm (H) 75cm (W) 22cm (D)
  • The remaining 12 steps turn and measure 18cm (H) 69cm (W) and 22cm (D)
  • There is a separate ground floor WC available for guest use

 GUEST LOUNGE/DINING ROOM/EATING ARRANGEMENTS

  • The guest lounge is located on the ground floor and is carpeted. It comprises a three-seater sofa and one two-seater sofa as well as wooden chairs and a high-backed armchair.  Fitted electric heater.
  • The dining room/conservatory is also on the ground floor and is accessed from the guest lounge via an 89cm wide door, step through and down 23cm with a depth of 16cm. Floor surface is non-slip mosaic, washable. Natural and electric lighting.  Fitted electric heater.
  • Meals are table service standard with assistance available. Tables measure 90 sq cm and have 64cm leg room and are 19cm high.

BREAKFAST:

  • Breakfast is served in the conservatory on the ground floor, overlooking the garden.
  • Breakfast is served at 8.30am.  Alternative times can be arranged to suit individual needs such as early departures, boat trips or meetings.  A cooked breakfast is always offered no matter how early!
  • A full cooked breakfast is offered (lighter options available, ie scrambled egg on toast, beans on toast, boiled egg etc) with cereals, fresh fruit salad, natural yoghurt, toast, tea and coffee. 
  • ANY SPECIAL DIETARY REQUIREMENTS MUST BE MENTIONED WHEN THE BOOKING IS MADE. DUE TO OUR GEOGRAPHICAL SITUATION AND LIMITED FOOD SUPPLIERS, I CANNOT GUARANTEE THAT ANY SPECIALISED FOODS WILL BE AVAILABLE.  I WOULD RECOMMEND THAT GUESTS BRING THEIR OWN SUPPLIES IF ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY, AND I WILL BE HAPPY TO STORE THESE ITEMS IN OUR FRIDGE.

LAUNDRY:

Laundry facilities are not available on site. A public facility (service wash) is available 5 minutes walk away (slight incline down hill) on Porthcressa Beach (service not available weekends).  Directions provided on request.

PURCHASES:

Not available on site. Shops are located a 10-minute walk away down a slight incline in the main town.  We carry information for all purchases, restaurants etc. at the property and are happy to advise.

OUTDOOR FACILITIES:

  • Front garden laid to lawn - picnic table and bench available for guest use
  • Slight incline to terraced area with seating under tree
  • No outdoor wc available

BEDROOMS:

  • No ground floor accommodation available
  • One twin and one double room available both situated upstairs (see above) 
  • Furniture cannot be moved
  • Divan beds with head boards
  • Beds are made using non-allergenic duvets & pillows.  Additional fleece blankets are provided.
  • One wooden chair in each room
  • Built-in wardrobe, schest of drawers and bedside cabinets provided
  • En-suite shower room in both bedrooms
  • Fitted short pile carpets
  • Digital flatscreen televisions with remote control and freeview
  • Touch control lamps
  • Cordless elecric kettles with tea & coffee making facilities
  • Hairdryer, hand/shower towels, hand wash gel, body lotion, shower gel, 2 in 1 shampoo & conditioner are provided
  • Mini-torches
  • Smoking prohibited throughout the property
  • Electricial items PAT tested annually

EN SUITE SHOWER ROOMS:

  • Both en-suite, with Myra electric thermostatically controlled showers, a sink with lever tap and WC with dual flush and soft close lid and seat.  Under sink storage provided. Electric shaver switch provided.
  • No Bath
  • Heated towel rail and towels provided
  • Floor non slip mosaic washable
  • Shower and hand gels, shampoo/conditioner combined, shower cap and body lotion provided
  • Shower mat provided
  • Slight step up to shower cubicle
  • Provisions/aids not provided
  • No alarm system or pull cord

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

  • We are unable to accept credit/debit card payment.  Guests wishing to pay by cheque wish guarantee card, are requested to do so on arrival please, made payable to: Mrs L Hicks or in advance if booking is for less than 7 days.
  • We regret that we are unable to accept pets or young children 
  • April Cottage is a non-smoking establishment
  • Evacuation details provided in bedrooms 
  • Front and rear doors can be used for evacuation
  • Assembly points clearly identified
  • Fire alarm sounds continuously in case of incident
  • Fire extinguishers in situ in both hallways
  • A shared guest fridge is available on first floor landing for medical supplies
  • Mobile phone reception - Vodafone (best) then O2 - other networks vary 
  • We are happy to take delivery of hired mobility equipment/other requirements
  • ANY SPECIAL DIETARY REQUIREMENTS MUST BE MENTIONED WHEN THE BOOKING IS MADE.  DUE TO OUR GEOGRAPHICAL SITUATION & LIMITED FOOD SUPPLIERS, I CANNOT GUARANTEE THAT ANY SPECIALISED FOODS WILL BE AVAILABLE.  I WOULD RECOMMEND THAT GUEST BRING THEIR OWN SUPPLIES IF ABSSOLUTELY NECESSARY, AND I WILL BE HAPPY TO STORE THESE ITEMS IN OUR FRIDGE.

DEPARTURE:

  • Guests are requested to vacate bedrooms by 9.45am on the day of departure.
  • If guests are not departing until later in the day, they are welcome to leave luggage and use the guest lounge and WC, situated on the ground floor.
  • Early flights - Early breakfasts can be arranged to suit, please advise of flight times in advance.
  • Scillonian Ferry luggage collection is available for a small fee.  Please advise me prior to the day of departure so that I can arrange collection by 10 am.  I will advise of tariff.

ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY:

We at April Cottage have made a conscious decision to do what we can to keep our enviornment as natural as possible and help protect it for future generations.  We have drawn up a policy to cover our efforts in this area.   Please ask us if you would like more details.
